It is with profound respect that we reflect on the life and legacy of David Lynch, the renowned filmmaker, artist, and devoted advocate for Transcendental Meditation, who passed away at the age of 78.
David Lynch is a name synonymous with cinematic wonder and creative exploration. Lynch’s storytelling transcends conventional boundaries, blending the mysterious with the mundane to unveil deeper truths about human existence. Lynch’s films invite audiences into dreamlike realms where beauty and darkness coexist.
David Lynch not only transformed cinema with masterpieces like Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive but also touched countless lives through his dedication to sharing the profound benefits of Transcendental Meditation.
Meditation and Creativity
TM is central to Lynch’s artistry. Since adopting the practice in the 1970s, Lynch credits TM with unlocking his creative potential and fostering inner peace. His David Lynch Foundation, established in 2005, has brought TM’s transformative benefits to students, veterans, and trauma survivors worldwide. For Lynch, meditation is a gateway to the “ocean of pure consciousness” that fuels his boundless imagination.
"I started Transcendental Meditation® in 1973 and have not missed a single meditation ever since. Twice a day, every day. It has given me effortless access to unlimited reserves of energy, creativity and happiness deep within. This level of life is sometimes called “pure consciousness” — it is a treasury. And this level of life is deep within us all.
But I had no idea how powerful and profound this technique could be until I saw firsthand how it was being practiced by veterans who suffer the living hell of post-traumatic stress and women and girls who are survivors of terrible violence.
TM is, in a word, life changing for the good.
In 2005, we started the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace to ensure that every child anywhere in the world who wanted to learn to meditate could do so. Now, the Foundation is actively teaching TM to adults and children in countries everywhere.
How are we able to do it? Because of the generosity of foundations and philanthropists and everyday people who want to ease the suffering of others — and who want to help create a better world.
If you don’t already meditate, take my advice: Start. It will be the best decision you ever make."
— David Lynch, 1946-2025
As David Lynch shared in his book Catching the Big Fish, “The thing about meditation is: you become more and more you.” Let us carry this wisdom forward in his honor, embracing the creativity, peace, and connection he championed.
Honoring His Legacy with Worldwide Meditation
In honor of the late, great David Lynch — a “guiding light of creativity, love, and peace” — his children have organized a global group meditation on January 20th, 2025, what would have been his 79th birthday. This worldwide meditation will take place at 12 PM PST (3 PM ET) and last for 10 minutes.
“Let us come together, wherever we are, to honor his legacy by spreading peace and love across the world. Please take this time to meditate, reflect, and send positivity into the universe. Thank you for being part of this celebration of his life. Love, Jennifer, Austin, Riley, and Lula Lynch.”
A Lasting Impact
To celebrate David Lynch is to honor the power of creativity and the beauty of mystery. His work reminds us to look deeper — beyond the surface of everyday life — and find magic in the unexpected. We also invite you to participate, whether it’s through a moment of meditation or revisiting his inspirational works. Together we can celebrate his enduring contributions to art, creativity, and consciousness.
Thank you, David Lynch, for your fearless exploration of art and life, and for inspiring us to dream with eyes wide open.
